About CAT

The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Qualification will provide you with a solid foundation in finance and accounting – providing you with all the necessary technical skills and knowledge required to perform an accounting-support role.

So whether you wish to start a career in finance, gain recognition for the wealth of skills and experience you have already achieved, or want accelerated progression to the ACCA Qualification and a more senior position in accountancy, ACCA's CAT Qualification will help you towards your career of choice.

To achieve CAT status you will need to:
Complete a set of exams
One-year's practical experience in the workplace.

Modules and structure
CAT consists of three levels: Introductory, Intermediate and Advances. There are 9 exams in the entire syllabus - you have to pass 14. Exams take place in June and December each year.  Find out more about modules and structure.
Entry requirements
Qualification is open to everyone, although your starting point may differ depending on previous qualifications.  Find out more about entry requirements.
Exemptions
If you have a degree or accountancy qualification you may gain exemptions and need to pass less exams. Find out more about exemptions.
Experience
You must have 3 years relevant practical experience, which can be completed in any size or type of business, and in any combination of sectors, before, during or after completing the exams. Find more about experience requirements.
